Jocelyn, glad you enjoyed it! Don't get me wrong, I love to experiment with the new hort hotness, but sometimes you just want something that you know well, and know will work. Plants we love to hate would be a good one. For me, it would be dwarf Alberta spruce, especially spiral- shaped ones.

The GD Round Table was a great find for me. It's not just a good resource, but it steered me to some other really enjoyable blogs. Love what you all have done with the place!

Loved your post today, which I did, indeed, find on Twitter! Oddball plants are fun, and the best way to personalize your garden, but the tried and true should be the foundation for an enduring landscape.

What's next? Plants we love to hate (can you say juniper)?!

Thanks for the shout out to the Garden Designers' Roundtable (I'm the lonely Mountain Time Zone rep)!

Comment on Update #2- Will the Sun Chips Bag Actually Compost Itself? by admin

Jen, some cities actually provide composting operations for their residents' green waste. These piles are scientifically managed, which means that the balance of carbon to nitrogen in maintained, they're regularly turned and aerated, and optimal temperatures are maintained (to create what is known as a hot or thermophilic compost pile). Because all these variables are controlled, it means the microbes chowing on the green waste are doing it as efficiently as possible. The Sun Chips bag will break down over time no matter what, but from what the marketing is saying we're looking at a much longer time than the 14 weeks in a well-controlled compost operation. I'm hopeful that it's not too much more. With a three-bin system I can live with it taking six months for a bag to decompose, but much longer than that isn't going to work for most gardeners.

Excuse me. What is a municipal managed compost pile? And why would the bag compost itself in there as opposed to wherever you shoved it?

Thank you

Nancy, thanks for the compliment! I'm flattered you asked, but since I'm not really familiar with your plant palette you'd probably be better served by working with a local designer. You can often get a referral to a good designer from a local nursery or garden center (don't even waste your breath asking at the big box stores). Alternately, you could search the directories at sites like the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (apld.org) or PLANET (landcarenetwork.org). Best of luck!

I like what you did with the home in Fredericks VA. Even though I live in Denver, CO - could you do a landscape design for my front yard? I'm in Zone 5 and could send you a sketch of all of the current measurements. Shoot me a message if you can.. thanks!
